Akatsi District is Making Strides

I have been paying attention to the water and sanitation space in the Akatsi District over the past couple of years – ever since the women we work with told us they wanted toilets in their communities.  Recently, there has been some pretty cool developments I wanted to briefly share.

A group called Water Services That Last published a report (click here to view) that details the water situation in the Akatsi District quite nicely.  It talks about how many water sources there are, how well they work, and also how well they are governed, which I found particularly important.  While the report is not all that encouraging, it is the kind of work that is expensive and often under-appreciated.

Even better is that the government of the Akatsi District is responding!  I don’t know the details, but in the article linked to below it discusses several outcomes that have resulted from the district’s commitment, including boreholes that have been repaired and community boards that have been formed.  This is the sort of work that gets me excited.  Hopefully we can get involved in these efforts, lending the hands of the Kekeli women to this exciting work already underway.
