The web-site linked to here describes the increased interest of Ghanaian medical students to work in rural areas of Ghana. According to the article from vibeghana.com, more than half of students are considering postings in these rural regions, many of which are in the north of Ghana, an area in great need of such help.
It is always nice to hear about locally sourced solutions to improve the health of the Ghanaian people. Often, following an extended education and medical debt, rural work is less favored by medical professionals to the higher paying work in the cities. As a medical trainee myself, I understand this sentiment. It is hard to move away from home, often to work harder and longer hours, for less money and recognition. Kudos to these students who are helping Ghana move forward by choosing the road less traveled.
