Ghana 2013: One week down, much more to come

Thursday concluded our first week with the Original Kekeli women, as we are coming to call them in order to distinguish from the new group that will begin training Monday.

As always it has been wonderful to return and be greeted warmly by the women whom are our friends. We tried out for the first time our Leadership Curriculum, which proved a little trickier than we had anticipated. The abstract ideas we were hoping would encourage and inspire the women didn’t always translate, so as always we had to pinch-hit.

Instead of a full 3 days of discussing leadership, we added in some health review at the request of the women- teaching again about family planning, menopause, and cholera. We also met with the Ghana Education Service and discussed ways we can partner with the School Health Education Program to better integrate the Kekeli women into the schools.  It was exciting to see the Kekeli women become animated as they planned to join in the teaching of the next Kekeli group, signing up for days to teach with a partner.

This weekend will be a ful one.  We are taking a day trip to Togo, going on an excursion with the new and old Kekeli groups to Pram Pram Beach, celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of the Sefe’s, and preparing for the next Kekeli training! Busy by any standard and definitely busy for Ghana time.
