Ghana and WHO collaborating on TB

In March this year it was announced that the WHO and the Ghana Health Service would be collaborating on a study to determine the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in the country. 1957 was the last time a study like this was conducted in Ghana.

They are expecting to find that 353 persons out of every 100,000 in Ghana will have some form of TB and that the results will help determine the steps needed to meet the Millennium Development Goals in Ghana. You can read the press release here.

The Ghana Health Service also reported an increased prevalence of HIV in 2009 from 1.7 to 1.9% as compared to 2008. It is estimated that 267,069 persons live with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. The Volta Region, the site of the RDP, has an HIV/AIDS rate of 2.6%. The story from the Ghana Health Service web-site can be found here.
