Portland RHC Dinner a Success

We held our first official fundraiser two days ago and had an amazing time.  The event was held at Dwayne and Holly Kroening’s home which provided a beautiful setting for a wonderful evening.

The event featured a silent auction, metal yard art created by Jen Ellsworth, and several other art pieces and items for sale.  Also on display was information about the history of the RHC and our partners, a summary of our current Village Health Promoter (VHP) project, and an explanation of our future goals.

The event was generously hosted by Dwayne and Holly Kroening, who provided all the food and drinks, as well as several silent auction items.  We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support of the RHC.  We could not have done the fundraiser without them.

Later in the evening, Olivia and I gave a short presentation about the project, emphasizing our core values, the VHP project, and sharing some of the benefits of joining us in supporting the rural areas of the Akatsi District.  Some of these benefits include having a personal connection with the project through us and the ability to have intimate knowledge of how donated funds are spent.  Furthermore, 100% of donations fund our programs in Ghana.  All travel, administrative costs, and overhead are paid for with personal funds instead of with donations from our supporters.

By the end of the evening we had raised over $2000 to directly benefit the rural areas of Akatsi through the VHP program.  With the money we hope to purchase bicycles for the 20 Kekeli women as well as continue to provide follow-up training for them throughout the end of 2011.

Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, we were able to share with many about the needs of those around the world.  The needs in our world are many, and Akatsi represents only a small fraction of that need, but what is important to us is that we are partnering with local communities to address some of their needs in a collaborative and sustainable way.

We are grateful beyond words to our hosts and helpers, and to all those who came to listen and give to the project of seeing lives positively impacted in Akatsi, little by little.
